The SC5000 Prime features 3 USB ports (1 on the front, 2 on the back) and 1 SD card slot. If multiple SC5000 units are connected together, all connected drives will be available to each unit.
No, there is no internal storage, though the player will load the currently playing track into the internal memory in case any drives are disconnected accidentally.
When choosing a portable USB drive or SD card for your system, we recommend using drives from reputable media brands whenever possible. SD cards must be Class 6 (c6) or faster. USB drives should have similar performance specs (at least 20MB/s read / 6 MB/s write speed). The faster the media, the faster tracks can load. Slower drives may result in lags when navigating through the collection and longer load times.
For a helpful comparison between all of the popular drives on the market, and a free test to check the stability of your own drive, check out the site: UserBenchmark.com. This will allow you to sort drives by several different parameters like capacity, price, read speed, write speed, etc. Keep in mind that better Peak Read MB/s ratings will be more important for efficient media playback, like playing music through the SC5000. This becomes even more important when a single drive is used to access songs for multiple layers or SC500 players simultaneously.
The SC5000 supports media formatted in FAT32 and exFAT with an MBR (Master Boot Record) style partition structure.
The hard drive size is limited, but it's based on the limitations of the formatting style. The two formats we support are FAT32 (Windows will not create partitions larger than 32GB) and exFAT (with a limit of 8 PETAbytes).
Other rules, like file size limit also apply, but those are also not limited by the OS. Users will run into those limitations on their computer instead of the SC5000. Larger song collections will influence things like search times, so we recommend that you only add songs to a drive that you need for the show/night/tour.
The SC5000 will play files up to 250Mb remotely. Files over 250Mb must be played from the player that contains the media. Files under 250Mb will continue to play if the drive is accidentally ejected.
We recommend limiting the total track count to under 10,000 songs on a media source. Larger track counts may affect load/search/sort times. We recommend that you only add songs to a drive that you need for the show/night/tour.
The SC5000 and the accompanying Engine Prime software support the following audio formats:
- MP3 32 kbit/s - 320 kbit/s + VBR
- M4A / AAC
- OGG Vorbis
- WAV 16-32 bit, 44.1k - 192k
- AIFF 16-32 bit, 44.1k - 192k
Yes! You can link up to four (4) SC5000 units together. Networked units can share songs and sync track info between each other.
The Prime series will come with a brand new and improved version of Engine called Engine Prime. While this is not compatible with the original version of Engine and vice versa, it adds tons of new features including personalized user profiles that hold on to preferences like screen brightness, sync settings, pictures or logos for the center display, and much more.
If you use an MCX8000, you will want to hang on to your Engine 1.5 for use with the controller.
Nope! If your tracks haven't yet been analyzed by Engine, the SC5000 will automatically analyze them for you once the drive is connected, making it the only media player in the world that can do this. This includes BPM, beat grid, and even key.
This circuit protects your SC5000 in the event of a power loss. If disconnected, the protection circuit will continue to play and all drives will be safely unmounted to prevent corruption.
A user profile is part of your Engine database and saves your preferred settings including screen brightness, colors, sync settings, the logo for the platter display and more. Each time a thumb drive storing your user profile is connected to any SC5000, you will be prompted to load the profile which will automatically jump to your preferred settings. This means that any SC5000 can quickly become your own with just a few clicks.
Yes, the SC5000, X1800 and VL12 Prime all have auto-switching power supplies. This means that the player will accept 100-240VAC at 50/60hz.
No, the SC5000 can be used on its own and with different mixers. You can even connect the link ports on two SC5000 units directly to each other to transfer data back and forth, without the need to use the link hub on the X1800 mixer.
Keep in mind that the Prime Series was created together as a complete system. By adding the X1800 Prime Series mixer to your SC5000 setup it will give you many advantages over other mixers. Advantages include Engine Connect auto and manual channel assignment setup, direct tempo information from SC5000 to ensure 100% accuracy of BPM and Sweep FX, On Air Mode which illuminates active decks when channel fader is open, color syncing between jog wheel LED and corresponding CUE buttons, built-in networking hub and more.
To add your own custom DJ or brand logo simply create a .PNG file, name it "logo.png" and place it into the Engine Library directory on your USB/SD media device. We recommend a .PNG with the dimensions of 600 x 600 pixels.
Engine Prime is a new iteration of the revolutionary Engine DJ software. This is a music analysis and management software for optimizing your music library, file navigation, and playback experience on the Denon DJ SC5000 prime media players. Engine Prime was built from the ground up to improve on the success of its predecessor while adding tons of new features such as personalized user profiles that store preferences like screen brightness, sync settings, pictures or logos for the center display, and much more.
Engine Prime is available as a free download for all users on the Denon DJ website. Follow the link below to download:

Engine Prime currently only officially supports Windows 8 and Windows 10, which are almost exclusively 64-bit. Because of this, we are currently only supporting 64-bit Windows platforms.
How much free space is required depends on the size of your music collection. Keep in mind, the grid and waveform data require additional storage space. This is approximately 200 Mb per 1000 songs, but this can vary greatly depending on the length of tracks in the collection.
Engine Prime is a completely separate version of the Engine software, not a subsequent version of the original Engine 1.5. Engine Prime will not be compatible with the MCX8000, so current users should hang on to the original Engine software for use with this product.
Yes! See the video guide below for a download and installation walkthrough, as well as an introduction to features and performance:
The Main Collection is a complete list of all connected media, both remote and local. This allows for all of your songs on either connected hard drives or internal storage to be used interchangeably, making it easy to find your track regardless of where the file is stored.
Because of this, duplicate entries may appear in the main collection if a song is located in both the main collection and a removable drive. Songs are not physically duplicated on the drive, the main collection is simply reporting the song in multiple databases. Removable drives can still be moved from one computer to another and have their crate structures retained, and any song in the main collection can be dragged to the Engine player for playback and editing at any time.
We realize that this is a departure from more traditional workflows and are working on an option to separate collection drives with remote drives in a more clear manner.
Yes! Engine Prime will read and import existing Serato databases and crates, as well as your iTunes library. Use the Library tab in the Engine Prime Settings to toggle the Serato and iTunes libraries on and off.
Yes, one of the great new features of Engine Prime is the built-in beat grid and tempo editor.
This is most likely due to running Engine Prime “as administrator.” Please make sure Run As Administrator is disabled in the advanced application preferences and try opening Engine Prime again.
This may happen when Windows (and therefore Engine Prime) detects an external drive as an internal drive. This can happen if an internal SATA drive is placed in a 3rd party USB enclosure. We do not support these drives and recommend you do not use them, as Windows is unable to safely eject the drives.
I enabled iTunes in the preferences and clicked Update iTunes Library but nothing happened. What's wrong?
iTunes isn’t always configured to share its database with other applications. To configure iTunes to do so:
- Open iTunes.
- Go to Preferences.
- Go to Advanced.
- Check off the box for Share iTunes Library XML with other applications.
- Click OK to save and exit the preferences.
- Quit iTunes.
- In Engine, select the iTunes tab and click Update iTunes Library.
My Dubstep collection is incorrectly analyzing at 70 BPM / My Dubstep collection is incorrectly analyzing at 140 BPM.
The analysis BPM range can be customized in the library tab of the preferences to cater to various music genres and BPMs.
Engine Prime creates and stores the database on the same drive(s) that store the tracks. This means that drives/media must have write access enabled to work with Engine Prime. Typical read-only situations include locked SD cards, CDs or other ROM media, and 12” Vinyl Discs.
